Tbilisi is the perfect base for exploring Georgia. Many of the country's highlights are 30 minutes to 3 hours from the capital, so you can see them in a day and be back at your hotel by evening. Here are the 12 best destinations, with rough travel times and tips.

1. Mtskheta and Jvari — 30 minutes

Georgia's ancient capital and spiritual heart. Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, Samtavro Monastery and Jvari Monastery on its hill above the river confluence are UNESCO-listed.

  • Getting there: minibus from Didube metro, taxi or tour.
  • Tip: easy to combine with Ananuri or Gori.

2. Ananuri and the Georgian Military Road to Kazbegi — 3 hours each way

The classic route: Zhinvali Reservoir, Ananuri Fortress, Gudauri, the Friendship Monument, the Jvari Pass and Stepantsminda with Gergeti church against Mount Kazbek.

  • Getting there: tours, a driver or a car. Minibuses run from Didube to Stepantsminda.
  • Tip: leave early — it's a long day. The road sometimes closes in winter.

3. Sighnaghi and Kakheti — 1.5–2 hours

Sighnaghi, the "city of love", has fortress walls and views over the Alazani Valley. On the way is Bodbe Monastery, and wineries with tastings are all around.

  • Getting there: minibuses from Samgori bus station, tours or a driver.
  • Tip: use a driver or tour so you can taste wine freely.

4. Telavi, Alaverdi and Tsinandali — 2 hours

Another Kakheti day: Telavi with Erekle II's palace, Alaverdi Cathedral, the Tsinandali estate with its garden and wine cellar, and Gremi Fortress.

  • Getting there: via the Gombori Pass or via Sagarejo.
  • Tip: check whether the Gombori road is open.

5. David Gareja — 2–2.5 hours

A cave monastery complex in the semi-desert of the south-east: the Lavra and Udabno with frescoes, set among unusual red and pink hills.

  • Getting there: tours or a driver — public transport is limited.
  • Tip: it's very hot in summer, so bring water and a hat; part of the complex lies in a border zone, so check current access.

6. Uplistsikhe and Gori — 1–1.5 hours

Uplistsikhe is an ancient cave town on the Mtkvari. Gori is Stalin's birthplace, with a museum and fortress.

  • Getting there: train or minibus to Gori, then a taxi to Uplistsikhe.
  • Tip: combine with Mtskheta on the way.

7. Borjomi — 2.5–3 hours

A spa town with its Central Park, springs of the famous mineral water and sulphur pools. Bakuriani is nearby.

  • Getting there: minibuses from Didube, the (slower) train or a car.
  • Tip: if you have time, stay overnight and visit Vardzia.

8. Betania — 1 hour

The medieval Betania Monastery (12th–13th centuries) in a wooded gorge near Tbilisi, with frescoes including a portrait of Queen Tamar.

  • Getting there: taxi or car; the final stretch is a mountain road.
  • Tip: observe the dress code — it's an active monastery.

9. Birtvisi Canyon — 1.5 hours

Dramatic rock formations and medieval fortress ruins in Kvemo Kartli — a good half-day hike.

  • Getting there: car or taxi to the trailhead near the nearest village, then on foot.
  • Tip: sturdy shoes are essential; the route has climbs.

10. Dmanisi — 1.5–2 hours

A world-class archaeological site where remains of some of the earliest humans outside Africa (about 1.8 million years old) were found, plus a medieval town and Dmanisi Sioni.

  • Getting there: car or tour.
  • Tip: combine with Birtvisi Canyon or Bolnisi.

11. Manglisi and Tsalka — 1.5–2 hours

The mountain resort of Manglisi with its pine forests, and the Tsalka Reservoir with the Dashbashi Canyon and its glass bridge.

  • Getting there: car or tour.
  • Tip: it's cooler here than in Tbilisi in summer.

12. The Tbilisi Sea and Chronicles of Georgia — 20–30 minutes

Not really out of town, but great for half a day: a reservoir with summer beaches and the Chronicles of Georgia monument on a hill.

  • Getting there: taxi.
  • Tip: come for sunset.

Getting around

  • Minibuses — cheap but tied to schedules; the main hubs are Didube (west and north) and Samgori/Ortachala (east and south).
  • Group tours — affordable and convenient, especially for Kazbegi and Kakheti.
  • A driver for the day — flexible and comfortable; good value for 2–4 people.
  • Car hire — freedom, but mind mountain roads and wine tastings.
  • Trains — to Gori and Borjomi.

Tips

  • Leave early, especially for the mountains and David Gareja.
  • Check the weather for Kazbegi — clouds often hide Kazbek after midday.
  • Follow the dress code at churches — bring a scarf and long clothes.
  • Cash is handy in villages and small cafés.
  • Don't drive after tastings.
